1AM SF gallery presents...

6th Street Beautification

1AM Gallery
1000 Howard Street
San Francisco, CA 94103 USA

December 20, 2008
TIME: 7:00pm - 10:00pm

To celebrate the holidays and the spirit of giving, 1AM is proud to present the "6th Street Beautification" exhibition. 1AM is donating a percentage of proceeds from all art sales to City Crossroads Community Center. Established in 1984, Crossroads, located in the heart of the city at 6th Street, is a place where SF youth can get off the streets and just be "kids" again rather than dealing with the pressures of the streets.

Gifted City Crossroads youth and members such as Camer1, Dennis Bullock, and Micronaut will be exhibiting their art alongside other local fine and urban artists. All the art will be affordable so come support the 6th Street Beautification with 1AM as we close out our groundbreaking year. As an added bonus, DJ Spinner D will be bringing you the soundtrack to the night with guest MC Cause.

Don't miss this chance to beautify your life with some art and the SOMA community center with your support!

The show opens on Dec 20th and runs through Feb 7th.

City Crossroads Community Center:

As many San Franciscans know, the Sixth Street corridor is a hard place to live, or even drive through for that matter. Drug abuse, alcohol abuse, the dealing of narcotic substances, prostitution and many other crimes are very evident in this area. What many don't know is that it is also a place where hundreds of youth and children reside. While most suburb children can play in their backyard with their friends or go to the park after school, the inner city does not provide many of these types of amenities. This is where City Crossroads Community Center comes in to play.

Established in 1984, Crossroads is place where kids can get off the streets and just be "kids" again rather than dealing with the pressures of the streets. It provides a safe environment where children and youth can play pool, basketball, video games, and many other activities. They can get help with homework, learn instruments, and immerse themselves in art. They get to go on field trips taking them out of the city, which for many is something that they experience for the first time. Crossroads is a place where they can seek counsel from the staff that loves them unconditionally. It is a place that believes in hope and healing in a neighborhood that is hurting.

TWENTY SIX: NEW WORKS BY RISK

Join world famous graffiti artist RISK from The Seventh Letter and friend of GuerillaOne, at his first ever-exclusive gallery show. All new pieces, from wood canvas to wall art, RISK pushes the limit and experiments with various styles you have never seen done in graffiti art.

In a career spanning twenty-six years, graffiti artist RISK has impacted the evolution of street writing as an artform in Los Angeles and worldwide. RISK pushed the limits further than any L.A. graffiti writer had ever gone before by bombing – what would later be referred to in the graffiti world as a "heaven" – on freeway overpasses and other highly visible spots throughout the city gaining major notoriety for his unique style. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets and into the gallery with the launch of the Third Rail series of art shows; he later parlayed the Third Rail brand into the first authentic line of graffiti-inspired clothing.

In describing this exhibition, RISK states:

"Twenty-Six is a collection of letters that I painted as if I were painting on the streets, using what paint and materials I had in my studio, while making sure they all had the movement and the energy of good old-school graffiti. It is a celebration of where I'm at today and where I have come from. Twenty-six letters of the alphabet, twenty-six years; I can’t think of a better way to define myself and my view of graffiti art."

Contemplating the arc of his career, RISK attributes his success to something deep inside him. “I think I was the first to do a lot of stuff because I was competitive. I always wanted to take things one step further.”

Guerrilla Birthday

To celebrate its first birthday Guerrilla Galleries is having an unfeasibly fashionable show - and you've got an invite.

At the opening party knees-up that kicks off on 5th December at 7pm, there'll be a for-one-night-only-never-to-be-repeated birthday edition live screen print signed and numbered in your presence and oof it'll be lulli

live painting, live print making, lots of artwork for sale at affordable prices, pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey. The last two were made up. Unless someone brings a donkey.

Artwork on show (and for sale) include new works from Ghostboy, Sums, Inkie, 45 RPM, plus a massive and awesome installation piece by Ziml - sections of which will be available to buy on the opening night at a discounted price. Jim Starr, Cheba and 3rd Eye's art will also be up for grabs. Ideal for Christmas presents, right kids?

"I was too drunk to remember my own first birthday, so I'm quite looking forward to this one," slurred gallery owner Julian Monaghan, in his especially shaved birthday suit, which is a tad more wrinkled than last year.

As it's close to Christmas and a birthday celebration too, Satan's little helpers will hand out the mulled lager and slices of the fairy liquid cake. If you're lucky yule get stuffed.

This show will sadly be the last show at Guerrilla Galleries current space but will open it's doors at a new venue in the new year... watch this space for updates.

Phetus

Friday, December 5, Phetus will reveal his latest collection of cutting-edge work to the public. From 7 to 11 p.m.

Phetus will be showcasing his work to not only those savvy enough to have been following him since his debut in 1988, but also those who only wish they were cool enough to say they knew this guy years ago. Raised on Long Island, home to some of the most influential artists in the rap community such as Busta Rhymes, Public Enemy, and De La Soul, Phetus says he started out during ìthe golden era when rap was good and urban art really took off.

His art combines bold, street-style elements with classic designs and the latest trends in pop art and culture to create fun, funky, and wacky works of art that artists such as LL Cool J, Ludacris, and Naughty by Nature have been wearing on custom clothing made by Phetus for years.

PRIMARY FLIGHT 2008

BLACKBOOKS in association with SPINELLO GALLERY, LANDSEA VENTURES, and SABOTAZ are proud to present PRIMARY FLIGHT 2008.

Once again graff writers and street artists hit the Wynwood streets in Miami's second installment of the internationally acclaimed, site specific, street level, mural installation. This years exhibition features 40 of today's most respected graffiti artists local and abroad, curated by BOOKSIIII, Lynn Yohana Howard, Logan Hicks, and Anthony Spinello. Maps outlining the street installation will be available for download online at primaryflight.com and on location in the wynwood streets. Graffiti has come a long way from the back seats of police cars to gracing the walls of the worlds greatest collections and museums. Primary Flight's original concept and soul purpose is to provide these artists with outdoor, concrete wall space, allowing them free reign to install their art as they see fit - back into graffiti's original environment - in what is arguably its most appealing format.

Across Rewriting

ACROSS REWRITING.

In mostra fino al 7 gennaio 2009.

Orario: lunedì/sabato, ore 18.00/01.00.

Circolo Culturale AMANTES
via Principe Amedeo 38/A
Torino

L'urgenza espressiva invece è sempre in divenire. Fluttua e i suoi confini vengono continuamente ridefiniti.

Josh Goldstein and Eric Orr

opening reception - Thursday, November 6th, 2008 6pm - 9pm

Acclaimed Bronx graffiti writer Eric Orr is best known for being one of the originators of icon graffiti in the early 1980's. His icon, Robot Head, was so named by Keith Haring, with whom he collaborated on a variety of projects.

Lately, Orr has focused on using MTA subway maps and authentic subway car signs acquired directly from the transit system as texture behind his iconic pictograms. He mounts these signs on canvas and mason boards, adding items often found in the stations, from metro cards to trash to the ever present advertising signs.

Brooklyn artist Josh Goldstein captures New York City bodega and Coney Island signage, Chinese take-out menus, and other urban flotsam; he then blows the images apart and reconstructs them in his sculptural photo collages mounted on salvaged plywood. Inspired by the grit and decay of New York City, his work pays homage to the churning engine of the city.

At the opening reception, art collectors will be able to create their own works of art using Goldstein's blocks and his "U pick, I stick" method.

Big Geezers

Artists participating in the Big Geezers show include MORCKY TROUBLES (Italy), MISS RIEL (Iceland), GALO (Italy), WAYNE HORSE (Germany), PEZ (Spain), MINIVILA (Croatia), FLYING FORTRESS (Germany), and THE LONDON POLICE (U.K).

Morcky’s roots are in graffiti although he has experience with photography, animation and video. These days he keeps an eye on the interaction of his paintings and drawings with their surroundings including walls and elements in the streets. Morcky also enjoys playing with perspective. Galo painted nearly every surface imaginable: fat bellies and flat ones, old walls and young electricity boxes, toilets and fences, ceilings and floors, canvas, wood, bikes and cars…sometimes he gets carried away. Obsessed with drawing, Horse loves to create situations, rather than whole stories, in a wide range of media. He leaves space for a story to evolve out of small apparently unconnected fragments, creating a different experience based on the individual’s own perspective. Pez took his signature smiling fish character to the streets to spread good vibrations and its success has spawned a host of smiling sibling characters. Minivila, a truly international artist who was raised in Croatia and is now based in Amsterdam, marries fashion, illustration, painting and music. Munich based artist Flying Förtress started to do classic graffiti in the early 90’s. After a hiatus where he focused on graphic design he hit the streets again with his infamous Teddy Troops. The London Police is a collective best known for their iconic “LADS” characters. The group travels extensively allowing the LADS to infiltrate cities around the world.

October 30th sees the opening night of Prescription Art's first exhibition - 'Outside In' - featuring 20 of the hottest street artists from across the globe including: Zeus (FR), L'Atlas (FR), Dain, Broken Crow, Bortusk Leer, FKDL, Case, Damon Ginandes, Deuce Seven (USA), Freek van Haagen (NL) and EGO LEONARD (NL). Showcasing the breadth of talent & styles hitting walls worldwide, each artist has a strong & distinctive voice – whilst avoiding clichéd stencils and subject matter.

In many cases this is the first time the artists have exhibited in the UK, despite having huge popularity in their own countries. On the other hand Zeus has been a big name on the UK graffiti scene since the 1980s. Overall this is the freshest line-up of talent assembled for any show this year, and will feature some genre-defining pieces. And a 3 meter lego man, Ego Leonard. www.egoleonard.com

The exhibition runs until 6th November (11-6), and takes place at the Truman Brewery, Brick Lane (entrance from Ely's Yard) London, UK.

Email rsvp@prescriptionart.com to be added to the list for the opening night.  Visit www.prescriptionart.com for more details.

Exposition

YOUNITY PRESENTS: HEART & SOUL, AN ART EXHIBITION & BOOK LAUNCH

Second Annual Exhibit Features 60 Avant-Garde Urban Contemporary Female Artists

Queens, NY (September 2008)— We are excited to announce the second annual YOUNITY art exhibition entitled Heart & Soul opening on October 17th, 2008 at Alphabeta in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. As a celebratory theme between 60 international women artists and what they identify as "heart and soul," the exhibit promises an urban landscape installation piece that unifies and pushes the boundaries of graffiti, photography, urban contemporary art and fine art.

The exhibition will showcase original artwork by current YOUNITY members as part of an indoor/outdoor site specific installation that pays homage to the urban landscape. Members include world-renowned artists: MAD C (Germany), Aiko Nakagawa (Japan), Faith47 (South Africa), Krista Franklin (Chicago), and Diana McClure (NYC), to name a few. Only 60 out of 300 female urban artists were selected to participate in this special exhibit. Works will range from hand-styles and graphics to collage and abstract riffs---all expressing ideas on female identity, the urban habitat, life and love.

The exhibit will also launch the Heart and Soul book, comprised of 60 artworks formatted for a 5x8 inch postcard-style flipbook. It is the first publication in the YOUNITY collector's book series that will showcase the work of current YOUNITY members. The Heart and Soul book will retail for $19.50 and will be sold at targeted, limited locations. Premiere copies will be available at the YOUNITY Heart & Soul event. Overall, only 120 books in this special series will be available.

YOUNITY is the first ever international women's urban contemporary art collective that brings female artists into a global networking system as a means to create art exhibitions, installations, books and a much needed archive of women's urban contemporary art. With the success of their premiere exhibit, The C R O S S O V E R, YOUNITY has become a sought after collective devoted to women with an inherent need to perfect their craft through self-expression, surpass male dominance and pass the torch on to younger female artists. For this project, only 60 out of 300 female urban artists were selected to participate with styles that range from hand-styles, graphics and collage to abstract riffs on the female identity, the urban habitat, life and love.

YOUNITY is in need of continued support to foster its self-publishing endeavors and independent growth. Any and all donations to the collective can be directed to: contribute@theyounity.com via PayPal.

Mike Giant

Opening reception, October 11th, 2008 from 7-11 pm. The show runs through November 1st premiering a solo exhibition of 60 plus works.

Recently retired from tattooing to focus on his fine art career, Giant also promotes his clothing line REBEL8, which he began here in San Francisco with partner Joshy D in 2003. Giant claims that although "it's been great to focus on drawings more than tattoos, admittedly [he] still enjoys working in skin on occasion." Like his art, the line highlights his trademark skulls, icons, and tattooed girls.

There is no denying Giant’s high skill level in creating the seamless images crafted by his Sharpie. Focusing now on his drawings, Giant has been able to add written comments and anecdotes to his illustrations welcoming viewers into his mind. His signature style harks back to old school print techniques that required defined line work and a steady hand, which Giant perfected through his studies of Architecture and Graphic Design. A stint in Amsterdam also influenced and added to Giant’s collection of works where he kicked back on his rented houseboat. Ultimately, it is Giant’s respect for a traditional technique; versus creating computer-generated images, and his attention to detail that warrant him a master at his craft.

Rostarr

Wreckless Abandon

www.oh-wow.com

Romon Kimin Yang aka Rostarr, was born in South Korea but has lived in NY since 1989. He has been a key figure in the city's underground art scene and has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Asia and Europe.

His free-formed work comes across as a universe of abstract and geometrical shapes from which symbolic and iconographic elements emerge in elegant and incisive gestural strokes. His work is defined by an expression he calls 'Graphysics', meaning the fusion of graphic art and design and the physical laws governing the movement of energy. His work extends into the mediums of painting, digital media, sculpture, textile and public art projects with the Barnstormers collective.

Yang graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1993. In 2000, he was featured as one of I.D. magazine's "I.D. 40 under 30". In 2004, he was recognized as an honoree at the A.I.C.P. show held yearly at the New York Museum of Modern Art and his work has been reviewed by Art Forum, Modern Painters, The New York Times and Artnet.com among other prominent publications.

"Fanatic - A Group show of Excessive Enthusiasm"

BLVD is proud to present "Fanatic" a group show that explores the enthusiasm expressed in "Fan" art. The artists participating in this show were given the task of creating art that is in tribute to something that they are truly a fan of. It did not matter whether it was related to entertainment, though much of it is, or cultural pursuits but had to be straight from the heart. BLVD Gallery is fanatic about the vibrant talent here in Seattle so most of the artists involved are from the area and are showing with us for the first time. Intermixed with them are some veteranos like Pars and Ego, as well as a surprise installation from longtime gallery fixtures Zeta Mek.

Exhibition: Urban Pin Up

From the October 5th until November 9th work of Asia and Yereth Jansen will be exposed at 'Skek:

Skek
Zeedijk 4 - 8
1012 AX Amsterdam

Opening

Sunday 5th of October, 16:00

During the exhibition several photos will be exposed, together with art objects created by Asia, which represent the style and theme of the project also brought forward in the photos. The exposed photos will be available for sale after the exhibition.

The project is inspired on early pin up styles seen in the 50s and 60s, most notably represented by Bettie Page, mixed with an underground style from the world of graffiti. The images strive to bring the two worlds in harmony with one another.

The power of the images lies in joining the two different styles into one; letting the two worlds meet harmoniously. This is represented in the clothing, make-up style, attributes and environment.

The suit has been created especially for the photo-shoot. The fan, umbrella and the gloves have been painted by Asia with Montana paint. The different attributes represent the female artist where two worlds meet.

The photos were taken in a squat in Amsterdam Noord; a place that has been the home to many graffiti artists and a fitting environment to our theme.

Getting the Picture: The Photography of Jon Naar 1958-2008

"Getting the Picture: The Photography of Jon Naar 1958-2008", opens September 18 at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. It is an updated version of his highly acclaimed retrospective exhibition that attracted a record-breaking 15,000 visitors to the Jan Cunen Museum in Oss, the Netherlands in 2005-2006.

The exhibition, displaying 65 of Jon Naar's photographs in black and white and in color, includes many of his works that have been shown at the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, the International Center for Photography, the Centre Pompidou, and many other museums and galleries worldwide.

Covering an extensive range of subjects, Jon Naar's photographs are organized in five main groups: Early Work in black and white, including Jon Naar's celebrated Shadows of Children on Swings, Strasbourg Children, and Broken Window; Artists and their Environment, with signature portraits of Andy Warhol, Josef Albers, Henry Moore, Marino Marini, Joseph Beuys, and many others; New York Graffiti, highlighting his iconic series documenting the first graffiti phenomenon in 1973 and featured most comprehensively in his masterful book The Birth of Graffiti published by Prestel; Architecture and Design, with his award-winning photography for Knoll International, IBM, the Festival of India, and other corporate and publishing clients, including The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Fortune, domus, Elle, Interiors, Twen, and Schoener Wohnen; and Work in Progress, Jon Naar's recent digital photography from portraiture to the art of urban identity and fine art.

Jon Naar's Getting the Picture Exhibition in the Rider University Art Gallery located in the Bart Luedecke Center 3rd Floor, 2083 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648, is curated by its director Professor Harry I. Naar.
